Your Chelsea History Lesson

THIS WEEKEND'S FIXTURE - -Chelsea Vs Wigan Athletic

Only in the English league will you get to play the same team in the space of 3 weeks, don’t the FA understand that some people have to write a history lesson “again”, Enough of the ranting. As you well know we haven’t played Wigan that much, just a total of 3 times, and one of those was just before Christmas. Anyway the other game, at home we won 1-0 with JT getting the goal in front of a pre Christmas crowd of 42,060.

CHELSEA LEGEND: This week’s legend is none other than our all time leading goalscorer Bobby Tambling. Making his debut as a 17 year old Vs West Ham in Feb 59 in a 3-2 win & yes he started off with the first of a future 202 goals for Chelsea. He is our only player to get pass the double ton, even the great Greavesy wasn’t close. He is also just one of four players who have scored 5 goals in a game for us, he also scored 4 goals on 4 separate occasions. In a run from Sept 62- Dec62 Bobby scored in12 out of 14 games, in the games that he did score he managed to score a total of 23 goals. Pretty prolific ehh!! But after that he’s boots must have wanted a break as he didn’t score again for 3 months, but he did still finish the season with 35 league goals. Bobby wasn’t just a goalscorer, he also had great speed, had an accurate shot and had a lethal left foot of which a fair percentage of his goals were scored. Bobby won just 3 England caps, he also won a league cup medal (65) & a FA Cup  runners up medal (67).Upon retiring he owned a sports shop, then worked as a hod carrier before being declared bankrupt. He now lives in the beautiful city of Cork, Ireland. His record of 202 goals was so very nearly broken by King Kerry but as its stands now it will be a long long time before anyone can be spoken about in the same breath as Bobby Tambling our greatest ever goalscorer and always a true…CHELSEA LEGEND!

CHELSEA TRIVIA: David Webb, David Speedie, Vinnie Jones, Glen Johnson, Ron Tindall, Reg Williams, Bert Murray, Tommy Langley, John Coady & John Terry. What do they have in common? They’ve all played in goal for Chelsea in an emergency.
