THIS WEEKEND'S FIXTURE - -Chelsea vs West Ham

Cor blimey guvner can ya spare some change for a poor old cockney fella’. So this weekend’s game see’s us up against those loveable rogues from the East End the ‘appy ammers’. We have a fairly decent record against West Ham at home. Having played them a total of 38 times we have sent them home blowing bubbles on 18 occasions, with 8 draws and 12 defeats, scoring 70 and letting in 59.Our biggest wins over West Ham were 6-2 in Apr 1966 & 5-1 in Jan 02.Our Biggest defeat was 0-4 in Mar 86, we also lost 1-6 during the war in the FL South league. We have also had a 5-5 draw in Dec 66: The spotlight game is from season 1986-87.We hadn’t started the season off to well as we were still waiting for our first home victory. After heavy home defeats to Luton 1-3 & Forest 2-6 all was not looking to good as we headed down the district line to West Ham. We had on paper a decent team but we just weren’t playing on paper though. There’s your problem Mr Hollins!!!!.We did quite well at Upton Park, we managed to bang in 3 goals but the problem was our defence were handing out very early Christmas presents and let in 5.Our team that day was…Godden, Wood, Rougvie, Pates, Wicks, Bumstead, Nevin  K Jones, Dixon, McAllister ,McNaught. Goalscorers. Bumstead, Jones, Dixon.

On this important date: The important date this week is Nov 11th 1972.On this day Chelsea were playing host to a team we actually sing about. Leicester City. Coming into this game we were in the middle of a poor run of form with only one win in 7 games, so a win really was needed, but Chelsea as only Chelsea could be, held out for a 1-1 draw, with Big Bill Garner getting our goal. Our team that day was…Sherwood, Locke, McCreadie, Hollins, Webb, Harris, Garland, Osgood, Garner, and Houseman…Att: 28,456.On this important date it was also the day Julie BurgerBitz was born.. Happy Birthday Julie

Memorable Match: The only game I could come up with was the first game of the season against a West Ham side that had 3 of the previous summer’s World cup winners in their team. The season was 1966-67, and after finishing a respectable 5th the season before we were hoping for a top 3 finish. It was a warm Saturday afternoon at Upton Park in front of a crowd of 36,122 .A full debut was given to our new signing Charlie Cooke. Chelsea had the bulk of the game but went 1 behind, but shortly after the break Hollins slapped in a trademark goal to level the score, with minutes left our debutant took off down the left wing cut inside and unleashed a daisy cutter which whizzed past a flailing Bobby Ferguson for a  2-1 win. We didn’t finish as high as we had hoped that season, finishing 9th, but we did make it to our first FA Cup final in 52 years.

CHELSEA LEGEND: This weeks Legend is our first championship winning captain Roy Bentley. Roy Who captained our championship winning team in 1954-55 was also a prolific scorer, having netted no fewer than 150 times in 366 games, he was more dominant with his right foot but also had a good shot on his leg foot and could also score with bullet headers. When he was signed by Chelsea he was signed as an inside forward, but was soon converted into a future goal scoring machine, finishing top scorer in 8 of his seasons at the Bridge. His great all round play led to international honors with Roy claiming a winner against the might Scots and also bagging a hat trick against Wales. But unfortunately Roy was part of the infamous England team that lost 1-0 to the USA  IN 1950.His greatest moment with out a doubt has got to be winning that first elusive trophy for Chelsea in 1955,he also won  just 12 England caps. In later years Roy he played for our neighbors Fulham and QPR, mostly as a center half. He retired from playing in Jan 1963 and went too managed among others Reading where he still resides to this day. Roy is still a keen Chelsea fan and can been seen at most games and as forever the gentleman he has time for everyone even at the sprightly age of  82.Roy Bentley a TRUE CHELSEA LEGEND!

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT! Everybody recognizes the fact that Vialli fielded a non English 11 on Dec 26th 1999, but did you know that Chelsea fielded a team with just 1 Englishman in the team way back in 1905, Vs Everton. The other 10 were Scots and Irish…Well they weren’t homegrown were they! The lone Englishman was Frank Pearson...I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!!!
