Your Chelsea History Lesson

THIS WEEK'S FIXTURE - -Watford Vs Chelsea:  Wow, You know I’ve just checked out  the stats against the Hornets and I would have thought we had played them more in the league, but apparently in League competition we have only played them 9 times at Vicarage Road. But saying that we have played them a bunch way back, in various competitions, such as The London Combination, London War League and The Football League South. So our League stats read something like this…Played 9 Won 5, Lost 4, Goals for...16..Goals against 14. From these games our biggest win was a 0-3 in Sept 87 (the day I first got married) …at least  there was something to smile about that day as Jukebox Durie grabbed  a couple and King Kerry getting the other. As for defeats we have been on the receiving end of a couple of 1-3’s, the first in Sept 85 with Rougvie getting our goal and in Apr 87 with K Jones grabbing a consolation goal.

Not So Recent Stats: So being as we don’t have a lot of recent history I thought for a change we’ll go back to when we played the Hornets before ‘old’ Elton realized he was a poof. These games were all played in the various competitions listed above. There were 16 games played between Chelsea and Watford between 1915-16 and our first “proper” League meeting in Sept 79 .The stats read as follows. Won 11,Lost 2,Drew 3.Our biggest win 1-6 in Oct 44 with Joe Payne grabbing 4,there was also a 0-3 win in Jan 17 with Jim Thomson getting all 3 and this was played out in front of a crowd of just 350,and I bet they were all Chelsea fans!!!!!.Our biggest loss to The Hornets was actually at the Bridge where we lost in a 7 goal thriller 3-4 in May 45 and this crowd wasn’t much better as only 1896 turned up…must have been a tube strike that day.

CHELSEA LEGEND: This week’s legend is one of my favorite players, that was until he left!!!The Chelsea faithful used to sing Poyet there’s only one Poyet. Its none other than Gustavo Poyet. He joined us a the start of the 97-98 season, making his debut in a 2-3 loss at Coventry, but he didn’t take long to get on the scoresheet as he scored in our 0-6 mauling away at Barnsley. Poyet was player who (imho) always gave 100% he never let the team down, he was a strong, powerful attacking midfielder who scored some great goals for us ,we also used him as a makeshift center forward sometimes and again he never let us down. Gus was also a great header of the ball and scored a lot of goals from corners. Some of his goals that stand out are the first in the 5-0 Manure game in Oct 99, the shot on the volley Vs Sunderland at the start of season 99-00, the goals that beat the Barcodes in the last semi final at Wembley in 00 and last but not least the goal that won us the Super Cup Vs Real Madrid. He won a decent pile of medals in his time at Chelsea, including the 2000 FA Cup, ECW Cup and the Super Cup, but for some reason he didn’t figure in the 98 League cup final or any of the games before, none the less Gus was a great servant to the club who played 145 games and scored a total of 49 goals for us. then he left us to join Spurs, upon doing this a lot of narrow minded people (I wont call them fans) took a sudden dislike to a player they all adored, personally I take him for what he did at Chelsea not what he done when he left. After he left Spurs he went to play beach football in Uruguay and now he is a coach at Leeds. Gus Poyet a fan friendly player and a TRUE CHELSEA LEGEND!

CHELSEA TRIVIA: Bobby Smith & Les Allen –Spurs, George Graham-Arsenal, Mark Hughes & Paul Parker-Manure, Manu Petit-Arsenal all have one thing in common they are the only players to have played for Chelsea who have won the double before or after joining us
