THIS WEEKEND'S FIXTURE - -Chelsea vs Watford

This week’s game sees us play the Hornets. We haven’t played Watford all that much in the league, just a total of 18 times, we have (to put it mildly) a crap record against them at the Bridge. Having played them 9 times we have only grab all the points twice, with 3 draws and losing 4 .The only two times we have won was in 2000 the score was 2-1, with the unlikely scorers being Desailly & Harley, and 1979 .We had a real dark period against Watford from the mid 80’s with only 2 wins, it must have been the future England manager Graham”turnip” Taylor’s input that done that to them… (I think not!!! Graham I think not!!!) The spotlight game this week goes back to our other victory against them way back on Sept 22 1979.At the time of this game we were struggling in 18th place in the old second division, this position not being helped by four consecutive defeats, which after just six games with 5 points was not very good, Mind you Watford were only in 13th with 6 points. So thankfully after a Gary Johnson brace we overtook them and were heading for another run of 10 wins from 12 games. Unfortunately we missed out on promotion that season by finishing 4th.

Memorable Match: This week’s memorable match against Watford can only be the FA cup Semi final of 1970.The game was played at White Hart Lane, as it was called in the days before the Chelsea winning sequence begun. Now this game is from memory so please forgive if it’s not all that accurate. It was a cold damp Saturday afternoon with Chelsea being the overwhelming favorites to progress to their first final in 3 years .We started with 10 of the future cup final players playing, Hudson being left out due to injury and being replaced by Baldwin. Watford had a half decent team in the 70’s the likes of Ernie Whalley (later on the Chelsea coaching staff) Barry Endean and goalie Mick Walker (Ian’s dad). The pitch was a disgrace ,just as bad as the one we would encounter at Wembley in a months time. We were all over the Hornets with Cooke doing his best to dribble down the wing like it was a bowling green, Hutchinson with his socks down by his ankles near enough straight away and Houseman having probably his best game (imho) for Chelsea. At half time the score was 3-0 to Chelsea with goals from Ossie, Houseman and Webb, the second half Watford got one back from Endean and then Chelsea managed to get another couple one from Houseman and one from Hutchinson. The game was watched by 55,209 as Chelsea ran out 5-1 victors. And off to Wembley we went.

CHELSEA LEGEND: Oh Dennis Wise scored a F****g great goal at the San Siro. But there is so much to talk about when you talk about The Little Menace. From breaking in to the Blue Peter Garden to captaining one of the best Chelsea teams in our history to having a disagreement with a taxi driver, Wisey gave us so many memories and not just from off the pitch but from all the bookings/sending offs to his marshalling of the Chelsea team. Wisey made his Debut in Aug 1990, after we paid an eyebrow raising 1.6 million quid, for a bloke from Wimbledon. Little did we know that he would end up playing 444 games and knocking in 76 goals in 11 years tenure at the Bridge. He was always in the thick of things and always managed to getting the opposition fans going, he always got abuse whenever he took a corner but ‘kudos’ to Wisey he always give as good as he got. One instance was vs. the Villa at Villa Park, he was getting constant abuse from a rather rotund bald guy, Wisey had the last laugh by scoring and running over to the guy and started rubbing his head at the guy. But my favorite moment with Wisey has to be, after the feyenoord away game, the players came out for a ‘warm down’ and as we had to stay in the ground for ages after the game (due to feyenoord fans being a little feisty) we watched the warm down, we started singing, Wisey didn’t do any more of the warm down and came to the bye line and started orchestrating the crowd with a rendition of one man went to mow ,and after we had finished he told us in typical Dennis Wise Language that we weren’t very good. But seriously Wisey won a sack full of medals with Chelsea including 2 Fa cup winners, 1 Ecwc winners medal 1 League cup winners medal, 1 super cup Winners medal, Charity shield medals and about 20 England caps... Dennis Wise a true CHELSEA LEGEND…

ON THIS IMPORTANT DATE: I have 3 Important Dates this month, one for Julie (Mrs. Burgerbitz),one for Dutter 44(sorry I don’t have a first name) and the one I’m doing this week is for tju1973.The important date is Nov 10 1973 on this day Chelsea were playing host to the ‘other scousers’ Everton. This game was sandwiched between Manure Nited (a) and Le Arse (a), both of which we drew. Against Everton we ran out 3-1 winners with Ossie getting a brace and Baldwin grabbing the third. The game was watch by 26,398 which was above our average for the season which was 25,983.The Team that day was …Bonetti, Locke, Hollins, Kember, Hinton, Webb Britton, Baldwin, Osgood, Hudson, and Houseman.

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT! That 8 of  our lowest average attendances have been between 1980-81 to 1993-94,our lowest average Att was in 1982-83  which was only 12,737..others were 81-82…13,132…1905-06…14,368…88-89…15,957…1906-07…17,578…86-87…17,694…80-81…17,896…92-93…18,754...I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!!!
