Your Chelsea History Lesson

THIS WEEKEND'S FIXTURE - -Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur

So here we are at one of my favorite fixtures, Chelsea against the Spurs at 3 point lane. Where oh where do I start!!! So much history to write about, so lets get going. Firstly we have visited North London 59 times of which we have come away with all  the points 22 times, we have drawn 15 and lost an inexcusable 22.The goals tally  is Chelsea 87, Spurs 99.All I can say is they must have had the upper hand before the War cos they ain’t any good now!!! As everybody knows we have a bit of a thing going against this “so called big team from London”,we have’nt lost to them since the year dot ,no sorry 1990,it was so long ago I bet some of you reading this were’nt even born. The last time we lost to Spurs in the League was under the management of Bobby Campbell at home  and we lost 1-2 in front of 28,130 with John Bumstead getting our solitary goal. The last time we lost at their place was even further back in Aug 1987 under John Hollins,0-1.This weeks spotlight game has been taken from the 1969-70 season .This game was our last league game before we played Leeds in the Cup Final the following week ,so you would have thought our boys would be taking it easy with such a big game ahead of them, but no the Chels did’nt want to let the fans down. In front of a near full house Stamford Bridge, a crowd of 44,925 witnessed yet another victory over Spurs, 1-0, with Tommy Baldwin gettting the only goal. The Chelsea team that day  was Bonetti, Webb, McCreadie, Hollins, Dempsey, Hinton, Baldwin, Houseman, Osgood, Birchenall, Cooke. This was also Alan Birchenall’s last game at the Bridge  for Chelsea.

Recent statistics: Going back to the 1999-00 season .This year we ended  up finishing 5th with 65 pts and Spurs finished 10th with only 53 pts.We had the joint best home defence this year letting in just 12 goals(we were tied with Villa, who must have borrow the Spurs team bus!!!) Our top goal scorer that season was the lanky but very nimble and likeable Tore Andre Flo with a not very good when you consider where we finished, 10 goals. This season also saw Chelsea have the longest undefeated sequence of the campaign, we went 16 games without defeat. Our Biggest win that season was an EMPHATIC 5-0 mauling of the Mancs, with goals coming from Poyet  (2),Sutton ,Morris and an OG from Berg…CAN WE PLAY YOU EVERY WEEK, was the cry from all around the ground…Oh happy days!!!

Memorable Match: There’s just so many to pick from against Spurs but the one I’m going for was the  league cup semi final Dec 71 & Jan 1972. This game was a two legged affair with the first leg at the Bridge. It was a pulsating game which saw Spurs take the lead twice in 2 minutes to lead 2-1,only for Garland to equalize and Hollins to smash home a penalty right at the end.So we went to 3 point lane with a slender 3-2 lead. An exciting first half was ended with a Spurs goal to level the aggregate score to 3-3.The second half  got underway with Garland scoring a thunderbolt of a shot  to take the lead on aggregate to 4-3.That should have been enough to see Chelsea through to their 3rd final in 3 years, but the ref had other ideas and gave a harsh, (harsh I tell you,I can still remember it at the time and I was only 9). Penalty, which Peters put away to make it 4-4 on aggregate. There was about 5 or 6 minutes left and my dad was going to send me to bed as I had school the next day and extra time was looming. Thankfully Hudson had other ideas and wanted the game finished before I hit dreamland. Chelsea were awarded a free kick just outside the box. The two sets of players were expecting a chip into the danger area but Huddy just kicked it, it went through numerous players legs, Knowles kicked thin air, Jennings was completely wrong footed and just stood and watch the ball crawl over the goal line. Everybody, players and fans were dumbfounded ,but then everyone had realized we were winning 5-4 on aggregate with seconds to go.The whistle went and we were at Wembley again .The rest is history with the defeat in the final and the start of the great Chelsea team of the 70’s falling apart.

CHELSEA LEGEND: Born is the king of Stamford Bridge was the all to familiar cry heard from the Shed, yes I’m talking about the one and only Peter Osgood. An ex bricklayer to full time professional  in 6 months goes to show the potential this young kid from Windsor had. After Ossie scored twice   on his debut aged 17 in 1964 he became a regular the following season. At the age of 19 he broke his leg against Blackpool and Ossie would be the first to admit that the  injury took a yard of pace away from him, but that did not diminish his talent for putting the ball in the back of the net. But lets not forget not only did he score 150 goals but his passing was immaculate and a lot of people overlook this. Ossie was only capped 4 times by England which for such a great player was a travesty, at the time the England manager was not really into flair players, as our own Hudson, Marsh, Bowles(from QPR) and Currie, would tell you.Ossie is the last player to score in every round of the Fa Cup a record which I don’t think will be beaten for a long time. I remember Ossie’s last game for Chelsea,it was a reserve game against Southampton (I think),he went off with a injured cheekbone,I can remember him turning around and looking at the Bridge for one last time. Thankfully he came back in 1978 but alas it was’nt the same Ossie that left, even though he did score on his 2nd debut vs Middlesboro( we lost 2-7).His last Chelsea appearance was the following season vs Birmingham in a 1-2 home loss .Ossie won A few medals with Chelsea including: Fa cup winners & Charity shield medal (70) Ecwc winners medal(71) and a league cup  runners up medal (72),he also won 4 caps for England. Peter Osgood always the king of Stamford Bridge and a true   ... CHELSEA LEGEND.

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!Carlo Cudicini and Ed De Goey have near identical Goalkeeping stats…Up to the start of this season (06-07) their stats are Cudicini played 178, De Goey played 178…goals conceded..Cudicini  162,De Goey 165..Clean sheets Cudicini 78 De Goey 72..  ...I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!!!
