THIS WEEKEND'S FIXTURE - -Chelsea Vs Newcastle United
So this week’s game has us up against the Chelsea old boys. And we don’t have a very good record against them up there, infact its pretty dismal…Heres the stats. We have played the barcodes 62 times and we have only won 13 times, with 15 draws and 34 losses, we have mustered 63 goals while the Magpies are 2 short of 100. Our biggest defeat to them is a 0-5 thrashing in Nov 74,(A)…Hmmm too much newky brown ale I think boys!!!, our biggest win is a net busting 6-0, in Oct 80(H), with Colin Lee bagging a hat trick. The highest draw is a 3-3 back in Apr 72(H), with Baldwin grabbing a brace.
Recent Statistics: Our recent results against Newcastle have been a little bit better for us. In our last 3 home games alone we have banged in 3-0, 4-0 & 5-0 wins, so here’s hoping for going one better this year. Going back to season 1999-00, we finished a respectable 5th while even though they had the highest win this season 8-0 Vs Sheff Weds the barcodes finished a disappointing 11th the highest scorers for both teams were Flo with 10 for Chelsea and Shearer with 23 for Newcastle. The season didn’t end to well for the boys from the North East, as Chelsea beat them in the last FA cup semi final 2-1.

Memorable Match: This week isn’t a memorable game, but a memorable moment. The game was the FA Cup semi final in 2000 and as great as it was to win via 2 Poyet goals to get to the last FA Cup final at wembley, it was the meeting of some Geordies in the pub after the game. Now I don’t know if many of you have met a Geordie but they are quite comical, with an infectious accent. Anyway we were in the pub, and this one newky fan was moaning like Arsene Wenger after a loss. Now this boy wasn’t complaining about the fact that Newcastle lost after having a lot of the game, which they did. He was moaning about the fact that he had been to Wembley in 73 & they had lost 3-0,he had been in 76 & they lost 2-0 he had been there for the two cup finals in the late 80’s and lost 2-0 & 1-0.What he was complaining about was that he had been to Wembley all these times and had not seen them scored, so during our 2-1 victory over them, he still haven’t seem them score as in typical Geordie brogue he said “ I missed the poxy goal as I was in the bog taking a p@#@ and I missed the f@#$%!&* thing. All we could do was fall about laughing and buy him a few beers to commiserate.

CHELSEA LEGEND. This weeks Legend is about Eddie McCreadie .Eddie was probably Chelsea best ever bargain buy, at just 6,000 pounds. He played 410 games and scored just 5 goals, 4 which were in the league, and the other being that memorable goal in the 1965 league cup final Vs Leicester City. He was also captain on the odd occasion that ‘Chopper Harris” was injured. He was an integral part along with Ken Shellito of the defence that played a part in Chelsea’s promotion push in 1963.Eddie Mac also played in both our cup finals in the late 60’s early 70’s,but by late 74,his career already marred by injuries, he had to retire. Eddie Mac later became Chelsea manager and guided us back to the top tier in 1976.After a fallout over contract talks (it was all over a new ford escort car!!!) Eddie quit. He went over to America and was a player/coach for Memphis Rogues. Upon finishing playing Eddie Mac is now a priest in Tennessee. Eddie McCreadie a great left back and a true....CHELSEA LEGEND.
