Your Chelsea History Lesson
THIS WEEKEND'S
FIXTURE - -Chelsea Vs Manchester Utd
So here we are up
against the only team who can take away our beloved 3 in a row
claim. As much as this is now a fixture we have enjoyed to watch it
hasn’t always been like that, especially at the Bridge. If you count
all games played (H &A) on a 3pts for a win basis, we have exactly
the same amount of points won at the Bridge as we have at the HOH.
73.Our home stats are as follows…Played 64 W 19 D 16 L 29,Goals for
93 Against 112.As for scores, we had few big losses in the 30’s &
40’s ,our biggest was a 0-4 reverse in Nov 47,we were also on the
receiving end of a nine goal thriller losing 3-6 in Sept 59,With P
Skillet 2 & Greaves getting the other in front of a packed Stamford
bridge crowd of 66,579.As for draws, there’s a lot of 0-0’s,1-1’s
the best/latest high scoring draw was
in Aug 02 where four goals were shared. Wins of course
there’s the classic 5-0 from Oct 99,but other high wins are hard to
find and the best I can find are a 6-2 in Sept 1930 & a 4-2 in Feb
37, with goals coming from Jimmy Argue & George Mills both grabbing
a brace, in front of a very poor turn out of just 16,382.
Recent Stats:
I’ve picked the season we stuffed them at home 5-0 and that season
is 99-00.Yes ok they won the league but we did finish a credible 5th
(& won the FA Cup!!!).Our home record was not bad, out of 19 games
we won 12, drew 5 & lost just 2; we scored 35 of our 53 goals at
home and only let in 12 at the Bridge. We actually didn’t let a goal
in at home until Oct when we lost to “that hat trick” by Kanu. We
started the season off in first place but had slipped as low as 10th
by mid Dec. We also used an incredible amount of players,32 got
playing time in the league alone. Attendances: Our capacity was 35,
421, our lowest gate was 31,591, our highest was 35, 113, which
brought us a healthy average of 34,532.

CHELSEA LEGEND:
This week’s Chelsea legend isn’t someone who played a lot of game
for us,114 to be exact, the only thing he won at Chelsea was the
player of the year award in 1981.His name is Petar Borota, and I’m
sure if you ever saw him play you will not ever forget his antics
“in goal”. Sometimes when he was bored with playing goalie he would
be further up field than the midfielders, he was probably the most
eccentric player ever to wear the blue of Chelsea. He was
flamboyant, erratic, brilliant all in the same game, but never
predictable. He was a big big favorite with the crowd from his first
game Vs Liverpool in 79,his last game was a 0-6 mauling away at
Rotherham, but I would like to bet he wasn’t anywhere near his goal
when half of them went in!!!.The one game I can remember him in was
a 6-0 win over Newcastle, he decided he wasn’t going on goal anymore
and moved to play as a holding player between the midfield and
attack. I remember him speaking to Colin Lee & Gary Johnson on the
half way line and they looked totally lost as to what was going on.
Geoff Hurst was having a fit on the touchline, but Borota wouldn’t
have any of it. Anyway he never played another game for us after Nov
81 and was replaced by a young goalie called Steve Francis, who was
a good replacement, but no entertainer like Petar Borota. He
returned to Yugoslavia in 85 only to be implicated in a burglary
racket. I think on the back of that he may have done some jail time
but I’m not to sure on that. I would love to see him as a guest at
the Bridge one day as I’m sure he would return to a hero’s welcome.
Petar Borota, a great entertainer and a true…CHELSEA LEGEND!
