Your Chelsea History Lesson
THIS WEEKEND'S FIXTURE - -Manchester United vs Chelsea
There’s so much history between us that I’ve no Idea where to start. We have played the Mancs at the house of horrors a total of 64 times. We haven’t done to badly up there, especially in recent years. Our record is as follows…Won 17, drawn 22 & lost 25, our goals total 67 for & 100 against. They must have had the upper hand in the early years as I think we have only lost 4 times in the last 30 meetings. Our first game against Man Utd was on Christmas day 1905, which was played at a venue called Bank Street. We drew 0-0.We have had some classic encounters with The Mancs, none more so than a 5-6 loss at Stamford Bridge the year we won our first title. We have also gave them some belated Christmas presents in 1960 when we got hammered 6-0 at the HOH.But saying that we did stuff them 5-0 at our place in 1999.Which leads me nicely onto this week’s spotlight game. It was one of those damn early kick offs, but the crowd were in fine voice, as always against the Mancs. It had been raining prior to kick off but the sun shone as the teams entered onto the pitch, and it was shining even more 28 seconds later after Poyet thundered a header past a 3rd rate United keeper, who on this day wouldn’t have been able to catch a cold.15 minutes later we were 2-0 with Mr. not worth the money Sutton managed to get to a cross from Super Dan, it was 2-0 when Nicky Butt decided to put his knee into our captains mid riff and get a red card. Second half we were toying with them they couldn’t get the ball from us at all, and it was the first time I’ve seen ‘ol drunky nose’ have no idea what to do. Eventually Poyet got another, Berg scored his customary own goal for us and Dennis jr (Jody Morris) Popped up to blast the 5th right through Taibi’s legs 5-0.The team that day was…De Goey, Ferrier, Hogh, Leboeuf, Babayaro, Petrescu, Deschamps, Wise, Poyet, Sutton, Zola.Within weeks the video was out under the title “can we play you every week”…Oh I wish we could I really do..

Memorable Match: On Nov 10th 1979 Chelsea was away to Leyton Orient. Chelsea won 3-7.The significance behind this win is not that it may have been a 10 goal thriller but the fact that it was Chelsea’s 1000th League win. Our team that day was…Borota, Locke, G Wilkins, Bumstead, Pates, Chivers, Britton, Fillery, Frost, Walker and Harris (#11 on the wing!!!).There was a crowd of just 13,005 to watch this histories event, with goals coming from…Britton, Fillery, Frost 3, and Walker 2.
CHELSEA LEGEND...This week’s Chelsea legend will always be known as the Cat. The great Peter Bonetti. What can we say about The Cat, he played 729 games between the sticks with 600 over them in the league alone. Not the tallest goalie we have ever had, standing a mere 5ft 10.5 in, but he made up for his lack of height with his amazing agility and great pair of hands. In his 729 games he kept an incredible 208 clean sheets and conceded 970 goals. The Cat made his debut Apr 2 1960 in a 3-0 win at home to Man City, his last game was May 14th 1979 at home to Le Arse which we drew 1-1.In between all these years are many great games and happy memories, yet in all the seasons The Cat played in goal he did not complete 1 full season,64-65 & 68-69 being the closest with 41 starts from 42 games, and both times he missed games were at the start of the new year. The Cat went and won a plethora of medals while at the Bridge, but as great as he was he rarely got a look in as England’s custodian, due partly to Gordon Banks. He did manage a very disappointing 7 caps which no way justifies what a great Keeper he was. Sadly The Cat will always have to deal with the fact that he was the goalie during that fateful day in México, personally I blame Brian Labone & Keith Newton for bad marking. But that was not what Bonetti was all about, you knew when he was playing that you would have a decent shot a winning the game because he really was that good, ask all the other keepers who tried to take his place. Peter Bonetti, not just the first Chelsea player’s shirt I bought but a TRUE CHELSEA LEGEND
I DIDN'T KNOW THAT! IN 1965-66 the year after winning the League Cup, Chelsea decided to boycott the competition as we had qualified for the Fairs cup/ Uefa Cup. So Manure Nited we did it first so there!!!! [Start typing here]...I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!!!
