Your Chelsea History Lesson

THIS WEEK'S FIXTURE - -Manchester City Vs Chelsea: So we are up in the better side of Manchester this week. We have an indifferent record up in the “oasis” of Moss side, we have played there a total of 61 times and have only come away victors 18 times, and we have managed 16 draws but have had 27 losses. In those 61 games we have only managed to score 70 against their 90. So a lot of 1-0’s I would say. Our biggest wins in the blue side of Manchester have been a couple of 1-4’s the last being in Oct 66 with Kirkup, Baldwin, Osgood & Tambling getting the goals. As for high scoring draws, they don’t get better than 2-2, the last being in Nov 61. And now the defeats!!!  Oh boy we have taken some beatings up there. Dec 52 0-4, Dec 56  4-5, Sept 57 2-5, Nov 58 1-5 & finally 2-6 in Nov 77                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Recent Statistics: In season 95/96 Chelsea finished a disappointing 11th with 50 points while Man City was 3rd from bottom with 38 points. Our top scorer with 13 from 28 games was the wee man himself John Spencer, as for City Uwe Rosler had a poor return of 9 in 36 games. Our biggest win at the Bridge this year was a 5-0 over Middlesbrough, our biggest away win was at Upton Park 1-3.As for defeats, the red side beat us 1-4 at home and the Blackeyes beat us 0-3 at Ewood.

Memorable match: The only game apart from the “Ken Bates” full members cup has to be the ECWC Semi final on Apr 28 1971.Two weeks after a tense 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, courtesy of a Derek Smethurst goal we headed up the motorway hoping that Phillips would have a blinder and keep the City forward line of Lee, Bell, Summerbee & Mellor at bay. It was the first time two English Clubs had met in a European cup competition. As the teams came out it was noticeable that “big” Joe Corrigan was not in goal for City. Hopefully we might sneak an away goal and put this tie to bed. As the game got underway you could see straight away City meant business, it was constant pressure on the Chelsea goal and Phillips was doing all he could to keep it at 0-0.Into the second half and we managed to slowly take control of the midfield  with Houseman and Hollins commanding all in front of them. We eventually got a corner which was floated in from the right, everyone went for it, including the City reserve keeper (Healey), and he was the last person to touch it as the ball went in the net. After this went in the City players were not a happy bunch and started putting in some cynical tackles. Finally the whistle went and we had won our second trophy in Manc-land in a year & 2 days, but more importantly we were on our way to our first European Final.

CHELSEA LEGEND. This weeks Legend isn’t so much a fans favorite but someone who would guarantee you 100% effort in every game in played. I’m talking  about Johnny Bumstead. John started out with Chelsea as a 13 year old schoolboy and signed as an  apprentice way back in 1975, he  turned professional just a year and a half later. He was a competitive Midfielder who could also play in defence and on the odd occasion up front. He made his debut in Nov 78 in a 1-2 loss at Leeds, his last game being at home in Feb 91 in a 0-0 with the crazy gang. In between those games he played another 407 games and scored 44 goals, even though he didn’t win any major honors he did managed to grab a couple of 2nd division championship medals as well as a couple of full members cup winners medals. He is also the tenth highest appearance maker for Chelsea, which makes Johnny Bumstead a…CHELSEA LEGEND!
