THIS WEEK'S FIXTURE - -Charlton Athletic Vs Chelsea

Looking at our record at the Valley it’s well, average, nothing special, which considering they are not the hardest team to beat we have struggled in years gone by. Our record  in SE19 is as follows…Played 32, won 11, drew 9 & lost 12, we have managed a decent total of 47 goals for, but have let in 54. Our biggest defeats Vs Charlton are a 0-4 in 77 & a 2-5 in 83, we also had a 0-3 defeat away from The Bridge in 89, but we didn’t lose at The Valley either as for a while The Valiants were without their Valley, this game was played at their landlords ground Selhurst Park. The highest scoring draw is a 3-3 way back in 1940, but our biggest win was as recent as Nov 04 with JT grabbing a brace and Duffer & Eidur getting the others in a 0-4 rout, before that you have to go back to Dec 62 when we ran out 1-4 winners with Tambling getting all four.

Recent Statistics: Since season 2000/01 we have had an indifferent record against Charlton, having played them a total of 12 times we have won 5 drew 1 &  lost 5, in that sequence of results we did have a run of 5 wins from 6 games (Aug 02-May 05). Our best win(not our biggest) was the 4-1 drubbing on which the then Charlton boss Alan Curbishley said should have been called Stamford Beach, due to the amount of sand put on the pitch prior to the game. But I bet he wasn’t complaining when they took the lead though…I thought not Alan! The season I’m looking at is the first season Charlton came up and actually stayed up, that season was 01/02. While they finished 14th with 44 points we finished 6th with 20 points more. We actually lost both our games to them that season 0-1 at the Bridge & 2-1 at the Valley. Top scorers this year were for Charlton Jason Euell with 11 from 36,& for Chelsea JFH with 23 from 35,Eidur was 2nd top scorer with 14. This year we also had a full ground capacity of 42,420 with the highest being 41,725 (Manure) & the lowest  33,504(Charlton), which brings us to an healthy average of just over 39,000. As for our biggest wins this season, we had two 5-1’s Vs Bolton & West Ham, our biggest away win was 0-3 at the House of Horrors, but they also inflicted our biggest home defeat on us by the same score. We had three 1-2 away defeats and yes you guessed it, one was to Charlton.

CHELSEA LEGEND: There’s only one Kerry Dixon one Kerry Dixon there’s only one Kerry Dixon was so often the cry coming from the far reaches of the Shed end. He was without a doubt our wonder boy in the early 80’s thru to the early 90’s.Kerry joined us for a fee of 150,000 quid, and started off the 83/84 season with a bang with 4 goals in his first 2 games. A center forward in the old fashion style who would withstand a lot of tough challenges. In his first season he scored a very respectable total of 34 goals from 48 games, our highest for 21 years. In the next season he done even better scoring 36 in 53 and on the back of this he got some national recognition by being selected for the full England squad, going on to grab 4 goals in his first 3 full internationals, which helped his former club out with another 25k.He was also a member of the England World Cup Squad and took his cap total to 8.Kerry was hardly injured and in all the seasons he played for us his lowest return for games played was 43, twice in 86/87 & 87/88.Kerry’s last goal for us at the Bridge was Vs Nottm Forest in Nov 91,his last goal  in the blue of Chelsea was away at Norwich in a 0-1 win. After speaking with Kerry in New York a couple of summers ago, there were two things that will live with him forever, the first was that he never got to 203 goals, that really hurt him, and he will always remember the ovation/singing of his name at Wembley when we played Luton in the 1994 FA Cup semi final. Kerry Dixon a #9 through & through and always a TRUE. CHELSEA LEGEND!

CHELSEA TRIVIA: HAT TRICKS: Jimmy Greaves is the king here with 13, next nearest is G Hilsdon 9, Tambling & Dixon 8, Ossie got 5.Webby is the only defender to score a hat trick for us (68), our first ever hat trick scored was in our first home game ever in 1905, by Jimmy Windridge. In 1960/61 Greavesy scored 6 hat tricks. We have only concede 2 hat tricks in one game once Vs Nottm Forest (86).Speedie is the only player to score a hat trick for us at Wembley(full members cup 86).Man City have score the most hat tricks against us, a total of 6
