On This Day It’s Oct 3rd 64, The Yankees have just clinched their 5th straight pennant and the Beatles wanted to hold your hand with The Dixie Cups in the chapel of love, we had to console ourselves with our paltry average income of $7,336 by buying classic “crap” such as the easy bake oven and the mad magazine straight jacket. So it was just as well on the other side of the “pond” Chelsea were having a blast in the first division. Having just come off our first defeat of the season to Man Utd we needed to get back into winning ways, and we done it in style with our joint highest win ever over Blackburn. Our Team that day was...Bonetti, Shellito, McCreadie, Hollins, Hinton, R Harris, Murray, Tambling, Bridges, A Harris

Unsung Hero: Again the question Legend or unsung hero. This Player played in 344 games for us from the early 60’s through to the mid 70’s. I am talking about Marvin Hinton. He was a stylish Center half who was neat in a tackle a great reader of the game and a fine positional player, he was called into the initial 40 man World Cup Squad of 66 but didn’t make the final 22, mainly as there was some guy in a similar position called Bobby Moore. None the less he did play in our League Cup triumph of 65 and the FA Cup win in 70, he also played in the 67 FA Cup final as well, picking up a loser’s medal there. He only managed to find the net 4 times in all those games, his last being in a 2-1 win over Coventry City in Apr 73. He could have gone a lot further with his career had he been more ambitious as few players had more natural ability than Marvin.

Flashback: It’s the 2000-01 season and we started it off with winning the last Charity Shield at Wembley before it gets pulled down. So once the season got under way we had a London “derby” to start with Vs West Ham, we had our new signing Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink on show, and he didn’t lets us down scoring on 31 mins to send us in at half time in the lead. Later with goals from Zola and Stanic 2 we ran out 4-2 winners. Our next two games we disappointing as we lost one and drew one, both games away at Bradford and Villa. Sept didn’t start as we would have wanted either, with two more draws Vs Arsenal and Newcastle. Things were to get worse with a home defeat to Leicester and a 3-3 draw at Man Utd, but the worst thing happened at the end of the month when Roberto Di Matteo broke his leg in Switzerland. It was to become his last game for Chelsea and had to retire after a long battle in trying to get back playing. Oct started well with a 3-0 win over Liverpool, but we then lost at Sunderland 0-1. Our last two league games in Oct saw us thrash Coventry 6-1 and beat Spurs 3-0. The Coventry game was so one sided we were all disappointed we didn’t score at least 10, I’m sure if you ask anyone who was there they will remember this game. Hasselbaink scored 4 that day, 3 of them in a 16 minute period. Nov was a difficult month as we only picked up one point from a possible 12.Dec was a lot better with three wins and a draw, which for Chelsea over Christmas is really good. In these games we had a decent win over Derby 4-1 with Eidur grabbing a brace. Jan came and went with dropped points at Arsenal. But in amongst all the league games we played Gillingham in the cup, we won 4-2 but this game will be remembered more for some guy in a #26 shirt scoring his first goal for Chelsea. Feb was a crap month we didn’t win nothing in the league or the cup. Mar didn’t start much better, 0-0 at Coventry. But we picked up wins Vs West Ham and Middlesbrough, but we picked up another defeat against Sunderland 4-2. At this point our season was seemingly going nowhere, we were out of all the cups and had no chance of winning the league, so come the start of Apr all we had to play for was a UEFA Cup place. We started the month off well with a resounding win at Derby 0-4 with 3 goals in the last five minutes, we then beat Southampton and of course Spurs 1-0 and 3-0 respectively. Our last five games saw two wins, two losses and a draw; we finally finished in sixth place with 61 points, five behind Ipswich and seven behind Leeds. Our WLD’S Are 17,11,10, GF 68, GA 45. Our top score was JFH with 23. Our top league appearance player was Dennis Wise and Gianfranco Zola both with 36.
