Your Chelsea History Lesson

THIS WEEK'S FIXTURE - -Chelsea Vs Blackburn:  So it’s another semi- final for us, this time we are playing one of the elder statesman of English football, and a club who have a long distinguished history. Considering Blackburn and we have been around over 100 years we have only played each other in all cup competitions a total of 5 times, 3 in the FA Cup, once in the League Cup & once in the Full Members Cup. In the FA Cup games we have only won once & lost the other two. Our only win, which was sandwiched between a 1-2 loss in Feb 09(in round 2), and a 0-1 loss in Jan 84 (round 4) was a 3-0 home win in 14th Feb 31 with Law, Cheyne & Mi lls getting our goals in front of a very large valentine’s day crowd  of 61,170.See how romantic the men of the 30’s were, taking their bird to the game…must have be love!!!.As for the other two games, we lost the Full Members 0-3 in Mar 87 and our League Cup game we drew 0-0 but knocked them out on penalties, and later on went onto win it.

CHELSEA LEGEND: This week’s ledge is the man who scored our first winning Fa Cup final goal (albeit off the cheekbone), David Webb. Webby was Chelsea’s and probably still is known as our most versatile player ever, he played in every position except #11.He made his debut in Mar 68 as a center half in a 1-3 away win at HOH .On boxing day of the same year Webby became (and still is) the first Chelsea defender to score a hat trick against Ipswich. Three years later (again on Boxing Day) he proved his versatility when he put the gloves on (again Vs Ipswich) and kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win. Webby was a strong, enthusiastic player who was totally committed to the cause, and on the back of this he is in a select group of players who have been voted twice as the player of the year (69 & 72).In Feb 93 he answered an SOS from Ken Bates to help steer Chelsea from the relegation battle we had found ourselves in .Webby finished at Chelsea in May 74 having played 299 games and netting an impressive 33 goals. He will also be remembered for the goal that won us the Cup but here was player who would give you a 100% or more every game and on the back of his history David Webb will always be a true…Chelsea Legend.

Until Next Time Then…….Cheerio!  Tel
