On This Day:
So it’s Apr 9th 66 and Sophia Loren is about to get married in
Paris, but more importantly stateside the Anaheim Stadium is opening for the
California Angels. On the other side of the pond Chelsea have a small matter
of entertaining their rivals from the Far East, East London that is. And
what a good day it was for all Chelsea fans as we run out 6-2 winner our
team that day was... Bonetti, Kirkup, McCreadie, Hollins, Hinton, Harris,
Bridges, Graham, Osgood, Venables, Tambling...Att 35,958
Unsung
Hero:
Again I ask the question Unsung or Hero. John Dempsey played 207 games for
us and notched up 7 goals. He was a strong commanding center half who was at
the heart of our defence from the 60’s through to the mid 70’s .Mr. Reliable
as he was known. John was to become a vital part of our defence with David
Webb, but his finest hour was in Athens in the Ecwc Final, scoring a vital
goal in the replay. Dempsey won a few medals at Chelsea, including a Fa Cup
medal; he also won 13 caps for the Republic of Ireland. He left Chelsea in
March 76 to play for Philadelphia Fury, upon his return he tried management
but found it not to his liking. He decided to work at a special school for
handicapped kids in North London, where he still works today.
Flashback:
So it’s a new season in a new Division and with a fairly new manager in
charge. McCreadie’s 4th game in charge and it’s in the 2nd
division. The beginning of the 75-76 season had us start at Sunderland, who
would be the eventual Champions. And true to form we carried on from where
we left off, and got beat 2-1.Our next game got us our first point, at West
Brom. Our next 2 games were both at home and they brought us maximum points,
with two 3-1 wins over Carlisle and Oxford Utd. Our last game in August was
the start of a bad run for us as we went 8 games without a win. Our next win
in Oct to Blackpool was the start of a decent run of 5 wins and 2 draws. But
in the 70’s Chelsea were renowned for being inconsistent and true to form we
then went on another bad run of results, winning 2 and losing 5 of the next
7 games. January saw us start we a good 1-3 win at Nottingham forest, but
unfortunately we then slipped up against West Brom at home, losing
1-2.February didn’t start to well, with 2 draws
and a defeat, but the end of feb saw us start a 5 game undefeated
streak, which would take us into mid March. The Plymouth away win was to be
our last win of the season, and we still had 9 games to go, but saying that
we only lost 2 of our last 9.We ended the season in a consolidating 11th
place. Our WDL’S were... 12, 16, 14, GF 53, GA 54...Pts 40. Ray Wilkins was
our only ever present and he was also the player of the year. Our leading
Goalscorer with 11 goals was Ray Wilkins as well, so pretty much a one man
effort this year!!! Our average attendance was a sparse 18,956 with our best
being 29,011 against Southampton.
