On This Day:
It was a cold and wet December day and at Spurs we had to play. It was
December 6th 97, and after coming off four straight victories it
was off to 3 point lane, only this time we not only won, we won big, 1-6 to
be precise. In a game that was so one sided Spurs complained to the ref that
they wanted a ball as we wouldn’t give them the one we had…Our team that day
was…De Goey, Sinclair, Babayaro, Duberry, Leboeuf, Le Saux, Di Matteo,
Petrescu, Flo, Zola, Wise…Goalscorers..Petrescu, Di Matteo, Flo 3, Nicholls
Unsung
Hero:
This week’s unsung is someone who took a load of abuse from so called
“Chelsea fans”, I’m talking about Paul Canoville. Paul was our first
black player, making his first appearance as a sub in a 1-0 win Vs Crystal
Palace. Paul was a very pacey winger and had great ball control, none more
so than in the classic 4-4 draw at Sheffield Weds, a game which Paul, again
as a sub turned a certain defeat into a near victory. After 103 games and 15
goals and a load of unwarranted abuse Paul left for Reading. Towards the end
of his career Paul received unwanted media attention when he got involved
with drugs, which led to a court case. His health has not been the best in
recent years but now, thankfully with
the boo boys gone he is a welcome and regular visitor to the Bridge.
Flashback:
It’s now season 1976-77 and after finishing halfway up the Division two
table McCreadie’s young team were set to light up the Division…we hope!! We
still had the Cat in goal, still playing at the ripe old age of 35, in fact
apart from David Hay the rest of the team on opening day were from the youth
team.
We started off with an away game at Orient and thanks to a Steve Finnieston
goal we came back home with two points, our next two games were at home, of
which we picked up a draw and a win. Our first game in September was a trip
to “Harry the Dog country”...Millwall, we promptly got beat up, losing
3-0.But our form was to get better as we then went on a run seven wins in
eight games, Swain and “Jock” Finnieston were scoring goals at will. The
beginning of November saw us close to the top of the table with just Wolves
and Forest above us. Our form did dip slightly but throughout November we
did go unbeaten, winning two and drawing two.
December saw us have six fixtures, from Dec 3rd through to Dec 29th.Sandwiched
between two defeats we managed to get three draws and just one victory, mind
you the win was against Fulham in front of a phenomenal crowd of 55,003(I
think the 3 were me my dad and my friend!!!),thanks to goals from Droy and
Kenny Swain.
The start of the Queens jubilee year saw us at home to Hereford Utd ,and as
form would suggest we stuffed then 5-1.The FA Cup saw us fall at the first
hurdle losing in a replay at home to Southampton(well they were the
holders). Our league form had dipped in recent weeks, but thankfully so had
Forest’s.
From the beginning of February until mid March we only won one game, and
that was away at lowly Carlisle. Jock and Swain were still banging in the
goals, with a little (no pun intended) help from Ian Britton. Between them
they had scored 28 goals, with Finnieston getting 16.Swain was in good form
having scored six goals in eight games. Our results were getting better and
Forest were struggling, Wolves had also slipped up so we had the chance of
not just going up but winning the League. April was a heavy month as we had
to play eight games in just 28 days, we lost a couple but more importantly
we beat Forest. There were two games left to play in May, the first being a
very important away game at Wolves, both teams got the point they needed to
go up, but unfortunately we wouldn’t go up as Champions. Our last game was
exhibition stuff as we thrashed Hull City 4-0, with Jock grabbing a hat
trick. Our Wdl’s were 21, 13, 8, GF 73, GA 53, Pts 55. Our leading
appearance makers Locke, Wilkins and Lewington all on 42 games, Finnieston
was top scorer with 24 from 39 games. The player or the year was Ray
Wilkins. 643,302 passed through the old Bovril gates, with an average of 30,
633, not bad for a second division team. Our best attendance was the win
over Fulham just after Christmas.
