Top Appearance Makers Vs Newcastle Utd
On This Day: It’s Oct 25th 1980 and with Kenny Rogers telling everyone he’s the coward of the county, there was a new sound coming out of London, courtesy of Gary Numan’s Tubeway Army with the classic song “cars”. Chelsea was coming into the game with Newcastle on the back of winning 6 of the last 8 games. And as “current form” would suggest we whooped some booty, as we recorded our biggest home win ever over Newcastle 6-0.Our team that day was…Borota, Nutton, Rofe, Bumstead, Droy, Chivers, Britton, Fillery, Lee, Walker, Rhoades-Brown. Att 22,916.Ah well at least we had the Mike Weaver, Gerry Coetzee heavyweight fight on TV after the game.
Unsung
Hero:
This week’s unsung was bought as cover for the likes of The Sponge, Hutch
and Ossie. Chris Garland was bought for 100k in September 71 from Bristol
City. Due to illness, injuries and suspensions it wasn’t long before he got
his fair share of first team action. During his time at the Bridge he
averaged a goal every four games, he also played in our League Cup Final
defeat of 72.A dangerous player who could drop back into midfield if needed,
he scored 31 goals in 114 games. He was our joint top scorer in 72-73 with
11 league goals. He left Chelsea for Leicester City in February 75, helping
them stay, while we went down. He later Left Leicester to rejoined Bristol
City, where in 1983 he retired due to a knee injury. Unfortunately Chris is
now suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
Flashback:
It’s the start of the 97-98 season and once again we start with an away game
at Coventry, we never did any good at Coventry and true to form after going
0-2 up we lost to a Dion Dublin hat trick. Things got a little better
through the rest of August as we trounced Barnsley 0-6 away, beat Wimbledon
0-2 at Selhurst and then won our first game 4-2 in front of a newly built
Shed End against Southampton.
September started off well for us with another win (0-3) at Selhurst, this
time Vs Palace. Our last 3 games in September were against the “top 4”
Arsenal, Man Utd, Liverpool and Newcastle. In the Arsenal game we were
winning 2-0 with 16 minutes to go when Kanu turned the game on its head with
a hat trick, the winner being an unbelievable shot from outside the area on
the byline. To this day I still don’t know how he got it in from there. The
Man Utd game was a 2-2 draw up there, we then got ourselves a 1-0 win at
home to Newcastle, but things took a turn for the worst as we got a beating
at Anfield 4-2.October saw us playing more in cup competitions than League,
as we slowly progressed through the ECWC and the League Cup. In Europe we
had just got back from playing in the snow at Tromso, where we managed to
lose a farcical game 3-2.In the league we were not putting a decent run of
results together, a win Vs Leicester, a loss at Bolton.
November saw us start well, with a 0-2 win at Villa and a 2-1 win at the
Bridge over West Ham, we then had the second leg over Tromso, and thankfully
this was played on grass and subsequently we won 7-1.So we were already into
the quarter final stage of Europe, and with our win over Southampton we were
also in the League Cup Quarters. We then went up to Blackburn and lost
1-0,but then we went on an 8 game undefeated streak, some notable results
were a 4-0 hammering of Derby, more notable for Zola first and last ever hat
trick, oh yeah and Burger’s first Chelsea game. The next game was another
hammering this time at 3 point lane, where we came away with 3 points and a
1-6 win. Christmas was kind to us for a change, winning 2 and drawing 1.The
start of the new year saw us lose at home to Man Utd 3-5 at home in the FA
Cup, then we also lost up at Everton 3-1.We were still in the League Cup
thanks to a penalty shoot out at Ipswich. But after a 2-0 Vs Barnsley our
league form took a dip, losing 4 in a row, the loss of form was halted when
Crystal Palace showed up, and thankfully we stuffed them 6-2, this game
however will always remind me of Tomas Brolin’s belly flop in the Penalty
area trying to get on the end of a cross. I’m sure if you know anyone who
was at that game they will surely remember it…Total Classic moment. Anyway
enough of the reminiscing. In a short space of 3 weeks we had to play
Arsenal 3 times ,we lost at their place 2-0 in the League, and somehow
managed to only lose 2-1 in the League Cup, but by the time the 2nd
leg of the semi had rolled around we had a new manager in charge, and what a
dramatic night that was. Petrescu put us 1-0 on the night 2-2 on agg, then
Bobby Di Matteo scored a goal with probably the hardest shot I have ever
seen 3-2, the Bridge was going absolutely Ape, then Hughesy got another in
the second half 3-1 on the
night, 4-2 on Agg, Bergkamp got a late Penalty, but in Vialli’s first game
in charge we were off to Wembley.
At the beginning of March we had to negotiate Real Betis, thanks to 2 wonder
goals from Flo in Spain we had a 2-1 lead coming back to the Bridge, once
back at the Bridge we went 1 down but thanks to Sinclair, Bobby and Zola we
were through to another semi final. Our results in the Cups was having an
effect on our league results as we also went undefeated in March, winning
all games. The end of March saw us pick up our second trophy in less than a
year as we beat Middlesbrough 2-0 in the League Cup.
April didn’t start off that great as we lost 1-0 at Vicenza in the rain, but
our league results were great, winning our first 3.Our next game was the
return leg against Vicenza, and yes you guessed it we went 1-0 with a goal
that was miles off side by Luiso, can you remember him doing the all gone
quiet over there sign. I so wanted to slap that boy, but we had an hour leg
and we need 3 goals, it was raining...heavy, Gus got on back near enough
straight away, 2-1 and into the second half we still needed 2 goals, then
from a Le Saux cross it was 2-2, thanks to a Zola Header! Not long left when
De Goey booted the damn pigskin up field one bounce over Hughesy and the
defender, Hughsey shrugged him off like only Hughesy can and GOAL 3 freaking
2 we were on our way to Stockholm. Our season kind of petered out as we won
3 and lost 2, one notable result was a 4-1 win over Liverpool, and Stevie
Clarke finally getting that 10th goal of his Chelsea career. One
last game though in Stockholm, oh and what a trip. The official attendance
was just above 30,000 but I promise you there must have been at least
20-25,000 Chelsea there. You know the result. A memorable season, probably
my favorite, we played some great football, scored some great goals, and
Chelsea being Chelsea gave us all
plenty of scary moments along the way. If you get the chance to watch the
seasons highlights do it really was a great year. We ended up 4th,
our WDL’s 20, 3, 15, GF 71, GA 42, Pts 63. Our top appearance maker was Tore
Andre Flo with 34,he was also top scorer with 11.Our average attendance was
32,901,with a total of 625, 125 coming through the gates for all games, our
highest attendance was Vs Bolton 34,845,and this was for the last game of
the season.
