On This Day: It’s Aug 8th 1970 and while the New York Yankees were retiring Casey Stengel’s  number,#37, Chelsea were busy preparing for a Charity Shield match Vs the League Champions, Everton. We only had 7 players who had started in our FA Cup final success 3 months earlier and that showed in our play as the Toffees as they are affectionally known scored either side of an Ian Hutchinson header, the game was played at Stamford Bridge in front of a crowd of 43,547. Our team that day was...Bonetti, Webb, Harris, Hollins, Mulligan, Hinton, Weller, Hudson, Osgood, Hutchinson, Houseman. Sub: Smethurst

Unsung Hero: This week’s unsung played over 260 games for us. John Boyle walked into Stamford Bridge as a 15 year old and asked for a trial, he must have impressed as he ended up staying for 10 seasons. John was a player who was either in the team or on the verge, he was never an automatic choice. He made his debut in the League Cup Semi Final first leg Vs Aston Villa and promptly scored the winner. He produced some gritty performances in both midfield and defence and played in four of our finals from 65-72, missing out on the 1970 Final. John left Chelsea in Sept 74 for Brighton, he then finished his career in America.

Flashback: It’s been four seasons since we won the Championship and our Manager Ted Drake has not got us higher 11th. Something had to change. The start of the 58-59 season had us going up to Old Trafford on the opening day, and even though Greavesy banged in 2 we still let in 5. But 4 days later things would get back to normal as we beat Spurs 4-2 and eventual Champions Wolves 6-2, both games were at home. We were 3 games into the season and Greavesy already had 8 goals. September started off bad as Spurs kicked our derriere 4-0 at the soon to be named 3 point lane. September was a hard month, fixture wise, as we had to play 7 games in 24 days, thankfully we won 4 and lost 1, one game was an 11 goal thriller which we won 6-5 Vs Newcastle. October was dreadful we started with 3 consecutive defeats, finally winning the last game of the month at home to Leicester 5-2, one of the few games we scored a bunch and Greavesy didn’t get a sniff. November was also a bad month only winning 1 of our 5 games. By the End of November we had let in a total of 49 goals in just 19 games, things were not going to get any better any time soon. December came and went with 2 wins and 3 more defeats and yes we were still shipping in goals. The start of January saw us once again beat Wolves 2-1, but that was it for January, apart from beating Newcastle in Rd 3 of the FA Cup, and then losing to Villa in the Next Round. The beginning of February saw us hovering just above relegation, so Drake brought in 2 youngsters for the West Ham game. Their names were Bridges and Tambling, along with Greaves in a 3 man attack Chelsea won 3-2 with goals from the two debutants and Greavesy. Our next 3 games produced 16 goals but unfortunately 12 of those went in the goals against column. March turned up and so did 7 games in 26 days, including games on the 27th, 28th and 30th. In them 7 games we won 3, lost 3 and drew 1, we let in another 20 goals in those games, mind you we did score 12. Just as well it was goal average back then and not goal difference, as it is now. Thankfully with other teams as bad or even worse than us relegation was no longer a threat, so come April we didn’t have a great deal to play for, in fact our last 6 games wielded 3 wins, a draw and just 2 defeats. We ended the season in a lowly 14th, we scored 77 goals but we let in 2 short of 3 figures, only bettered by Portsmouth who went down with 112 goals against. Our average attendance was 39,841, our highest gate was 59,203 to see us thrash Spurs 4-2. Jimmy Greaves was our only ever present and of course top scorer with 32 league goals.

A To Z of Chelsea FC:

W: Wit of Ken Bates: Poverty amongst fans is grossly exaggerated when you see what they spend elsewhere. A small minority are poor and can’t afford it.
