Manager Profile: Our next manager was a Chelsea man through and through. Ken Shellito started out at Chelsea as a teenager. He was capped at an early age for England, where it was going to be a formality that he would be the right back for years to come. But after four operations on his left knee it was time to quit. He had played 123 games, scoring 2 goals. After spending numerous years on the Chelsea backroom staff Ken was appointed manager of the first team in July 77,his first game being at West Brom,we lost 3-0.Ken had inherited a bunch of players who had grown up with him through the schoolboy and reserve teams. In his first and only full season Ken had us finish a decent 16th, which with the players we had and no money available, wasn’t as bad as it looked. The following season was a disaster, having won just two games up to December the board decided to let Ken go. Ken’s record was played 65 won 15, drew 19, lost 31, a win percentage of just 23%, which unfortunately doesn’t tell the whole story of what Ken Shellito did for Chelsea.

On This Day: With the pop charts being dominated by those lovable scally’s from Liverpool, and with Lyndon Johnson about to be sworn in as the 36th US President, Chelsea had more pressing matters, mainly trying to negotiate Spaghetti Junction. It couldn’t have been that hard as the “true” blues came away with our biggest ever win at St Andrews…Our team that day was…Bonetti, Hinton, McCreadie, Hollins, Mortimore, Harris, Murray, Graham, Bridges, Venables, Tambling.

Unsung Hero: Ok so he played for Arsenal and Man Utd and he was also manager of Arsenal, Spurs and dirty Leeds. But he still played for Chelsea. George Graham is probably remembered more for what he done after he left Chelsea but as an inside forward/midfielder he scored on average a goal every two games, collecting a League Cup Medal along the way. During his time at the Bridge he formed a terrific partnership with Barry Bridges. Graham was only with us for just over two seasons, but in that time he managed 46 goals in 102 games.

Flashback: As the roaring twenties are coming to a close, Chelsea are looking to getting out of the second division, and after consecutive finishes of 5th,3rd,4th and 3rd in the previous four seasons, maybe this was to be the year.

We started off at the end of August with two wins against Swansea, 4-1 and away at Bradford, 2-1. Our win streak was to continue for another four games, letting in just one goal, and beating the mighty Middlesbrough 2-0, we dropped a point Vs Bristol City, but thankfully we had a nice 3-0 win Vs Nottingham Forest.

October didn’t start that well for us as we lost our first game, vs West Bromwich Albion, in-fact October was a bad month as we didn’t collect maximum points in any games. November wasn’t much better as we only got one win, against Preston 2-1.

December was a busy month for the boys in blue as we had to play eight games in 28 days, the last four in seven days brought us 3 wins and a draw.

The beginning of January saw us lose our first game at home to Blackpool, and things were not about to get any easier, as we had to travel up to Ayresome Park to play Middlesbrough, and another win was achieved as we came away with a 4-5 win. The rest of January saw us win in the FA Cup twice and in the League twice, but February was the turning point in our season, having lost in the FA Cup to Portsmouth we started losing in the League. March was a very hard month as we only picked up maximum points once, and that was in the middle of a nine game losing streak. April saw us start with a win, but the rest of the month saw us draw one, lose three and win our last game of the season, at home to Reading 2-1.

We ended up finishing a disappointing 9th. Our leading appearance maker this season was Tommy Law playing 39 of 42 games. Our top scorers were George Biswell and Andy Wilson, both with 9. Our WDL’S were, 17, 10, 15, GF 64, GA 64, Pts 44. Still one place and one point better off than Spurs. Our total attendance was 595,967 with an average gate of 28,379. The top attendance was Vs Middlesbrough 48,775.
