Manager Profile: David Calderhead: Became Chelsea’s new Manager in Aug 1907, on the back of his team’s (Lincoln City) performances against us in the FA Cup the previous season (we lost at home after a replay). He is Chelsea’s longest serving Manager staying 2 months short of 26 years, a record which will probably never be broken. In his tenure as Boss he took us to three FA Cup semi finals, which we all lost 1911, 1920, 1932), also two Division 2 runners up (1912, 1930). He did get us to our first ever FA Cup Final in 1915, but again we lost, our highest League position under him was a respectable 3rd place finish in Division one in 1920. The only piece of silverware we did managed to win was The London Victory Cup in 1919. Given that Calderhead had money at his disposal he might have won a little more, but none the less Calderhead was a well respected coach and few managers will equal his stint of close on 26 years. He was in charge for 1117 games of which the WLD’S are 473, 377, 267, a win percentage of 42% which over that amount of games is a pretty decent return. David Calderhead Manager from Aug 1907- May 1933.

On This Day: It’s early Sept in 92 and The Simpsons was starting to make waves with the end of it’s second season, we also had to endure Jump by Kriss Kross(those with the backwards pants!!!),we were traveling to the games on a minimum wage of just $4.25ph and gas was at just $ 1.19 per gallon .So it was up to Villa Park and with just one win in our first five games things were not looking to rosey. But thankfully we somehow managed to pull off a 1-3 victory. Our team that day was...Beasant,Clarke,Hall,V Jones, Elliott,Donaghy,Newton,Fleck,Harford,Townsend,Wise..Sub Lee

Unsung Hero: Tore, Tore Andre Flo was the cry so often heard around the Bridge after Flo had scored. Tore joined us in Aug 97 for a paltry fee of 300,000gbp; we later sold him to Glasgow Rangers for 12m gbp in Nov 00, not a bad bit of business that! In the 3 seasons he spent at the Bridge he probably played his best football and even though he only started 94 games he still managed to find the net an incredible 50 times. Flo is also our second most used sub ever, coming off the bench no fewer than 69 times. In the sub appearances he even managed to score 12 goals. At 6ft 4” most defenders thought that he wouldn’t have much ball control, but he was much underrated and was a decent crosser of the ball and could get to the byline easily. He had two good shooting feet and for someone so tall he didn’t get a great deal of goals with his head. Some of Flo’s great goals have been the 2 in the 3-4 comeback Vs Blackburn away, the 2 Vs Barcelona in our first ever Champions League campaign and the 2 away at Real Betis in the ECWC game. He helped himself to winner’s medals in The League Cup, ECWC & the Super Cup in 98 and the FA Cup in 2000. He also won 38 caps for Norway and scored 15 goals during his time at Chelsea. Even after scoring 50 goals for us Flo never got a Hat Trick, loads of braces but no Hat Tricks.

Flashback: It’s the start of the 2004/05 season and we have a new coach in charge, he can’t be that bad as he had just one the ECL with Porto. After losing out in the ECL ourselves Abramovich thought it right to get rid of Raineri. So Jose’s first game in charge was against Man Utd at home, and in front of a packed Stamford Bridge we got a victory thanks to an Eidur Gudjohnsen goal. At the start of the season everyone was hoping that this could be our season to finally win that elusive title. Our other three games in Aug brought us maximum points. In Sept we only played three league games and it was the first one away at Villa that we dropped our first points, we also dropped two points at home to Spurs, both games ending 0-0. October saw us have our first and only defeat of the season, away at Man City 0-1, but we ended the month on a high with 8 goals in two games, so by the end of October we were sitting pretty at the top of the pile and had only let in 3 goals in 11 games. November came and went and again we only dropped 2 points, this time at home to Bolton in a 2-2 draw, we were still scoring plenty of goals, scoring 4 goals in 5 of 7 games through late Oct to early Dec. In December through to January we went an incredible 10 league games without letting a goal in and by the beginning of March we had only let in 8 goals. The title was well within reach, could this be the season we finally win it? March saw us come and go with all points taken, April saw us win one and then drop 4 points from the next two games. Were nerves starting to come into play, was the sight of the premiership trophy beginning to play on the players minds? A win at Fulham put everyone’s minds at ease, we only had to win one more game and we still had four left. Our next game was a difficult one at Bolton, the first half was nothing special and nerves were beginning to fray…mine not the players!!!!! Thankfully Lamps help settle them by scoring that all important goal, and near the end he helped himself to another. The prem was coming to the Bridge….And boy did we Party!!!...Our WLD’S this season were 29, 1, 8 gf 72, ga 15, pts 95, top scorer Lampard 13, top appearances Lampard 38
